À propos de l'événement

In 1789, women were aware that the principle “men are born free and equal in rights” did not apply to them. In 1790, to complement the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen, the revolutionary Olympe de Gouges therefore wrote a Declaration of the Rights of Woman and of the Female Citizen. Today, the word “adelphity” is increasingly used on the social media accounts of LGBTQIA+ activist communities to address the limitations of the terms “sisterhood” and “brotherhood,” which are restricted to cisgender women and men.

The word “adelphity” comes from the Greek root adelph, which gave rise to the Greek words adelphos and adelphi, meaning brother and sister. It is both a synonym for sisterhood and brotherhood: “those born from the same mother.” It also includes non-binary people who do not identify with gendered terms. In 2018, the French High Council for Gender Equality (HCE) proposed nine recommendations to revise the Constitution, including replacing the French national motto “Liberty, Equality, Fraternity” with “Liberty, Equality, Adelphity.”
