Deindustrialization: the end of an era?
With Xavier Vigna, historian.
Today, deindustrialization goes hand in hand with industrialization: in some regions (or even in some countries), it results in dowfall, disaffection, or even desertification of the territories concerned. Closed factories, lost jobs, unemployment, brownfield sites, etc.: disrupting lives, territories, and collective identities, does deindustrialization mark the end of an era?
Xavier Vigna is a professor of contemporary history at Paris Nanterre University, specializing in the working class and industrial transformations. His research focuses on social struggles, working-class memory, and the changing nature of work. He is the author of *Histoire des ouvriers en France au XXe siècle* (Perrin, 2021).
